About
Active is a volunteer movement in Katerini, Greece, a capital city that was born under the shadow of mount Olympus just two months ago.
Each and every one of our members are people that already offered a lot to the community through various organisations and/or on a personal level, including taking care of strays.
Since the situation demanded a more organised and coordinated line of action, due to the incompetence of those in charge, we decided to gather up and get set.
We are not an organisation, we do not accept fees of any kind, we are not listed anywhere and we are determined to fight outside the system.
We are people fighting every day for our rights and animal rights and try to help any way we can. Our moral obligation dictates and leads our activities and interventions.
We have two goals.
First one is to ensure that:
- the municipality
- betters the conditions in the local animal shelter
- keeps record of all the strays and pets so that we can keep track of them and be able to go after those who deliberately "lose" their pets
- establishes an adoption process that ensures regular checks on the adopted animals
- forces fees in cases of abuse and neglect or abandonment
- the local authorities and police co-operates when in need of immediate intervention to ensure an animal's welfare
- the local authorities and police co-operates to record and keep track of all hunter's dogs (the main "source" of strays in our area) and sheperd's dogs (the second "source" of strays) since they let their dogs breed uncontrollably
- all schools in the municipality take up an informative programm on a monthly basis to sensitise children and adolescents regarding pets and strays
The second part has directly to do with stray welfare:
- set up a net of foster volunteers to take care of dogs in immediate need
- find homes for our strays
- get people to report abuses to the police
- teach people how to be a responsible "parent" for their pet
We will be keeping a record/report of actions, which will be set up shortly, and will be updated on a monthly basis.
Our immediate plan is to try and get the municipality to give us access to the local animal shelter (makes you wonder what they are trying to hide) in order to take pictures and videos of all the strays that are locked up in there, so that we can keep track of them and find homes for those who are in immediate need.
